RESOURCES FOR TEACHING READING

bullet

Every middle school content area and reading teacher should have Reading and the Middle School Student. The idea that all teachers are "teachers of reading" is a solid premise of this text.  It does a superb job of presenting  the views of what is happening in middle school literacy, and the research and implications for quality literacy programs is here in a readable format. In addition, the book includes a multitude of excellent strategies to use in the classroom and detailed information about the components of literacy programs with models of exemplary programs detailed. As a middle school educator, I highly recommend it!

bullet Cooperative Learning Reading Activities is a good source for those who use Kagan's Cooperative Learning structures in their classrooms.  It contains ready-to-use blackline masters and activities that tie into many aspects of reading.  I believe the book may be somewhat confusing for those who are not familiar with the cooperative learning strategies.
bulletReading Survival Skills for the Middle Grades contains over 50 activities that focus on specific reading skills such as recognizing the main idea, drawing conclusions, making inferences, predicting outcomes, and distinguishing between fact and opinion. Also included are activities that give students practice in using the encyclopedia, reading charts and graphs, using the thesaurus, and skimming to locate information.
