This lesson serves as a short introduction of the science fiction genre. The lesson can be expanded if you want it to be more than an introduction.

Accommodations for Struggling Students Additional Resources

LESSON PLAN:

Overview: In this lesson, students will become familiar with the characteristics of science fiction after listening to the picture book Here Come the Aliens by Colin McNaughton.

Procedure:

Show the students the transparency of the Elements of Science Fiction. Have them write down the notes as you discuss each element.

Have the students clear everything off their desks. Then read Here Come the Aliens to them.

Give each student a graphic organizer and have them fill it in as you read the story a second time. (Read it a third time if necessary.)

Have the students provide answers for the graphic organizer. Record answers on the transparency copy for the students, having them add information to their own graphic organizers.

Give each student a copy of a book order and have them identify the books that are science fiction. They will need to use the descriptions and the illustrations.

Closure: Review the elements of science fiction and have the students give examples of books or movies that are science fiction. Discuss the scientific element in each example.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STRUGGLING STUDENTS:

	After reading the story the second time through, read it again so the students can get as many notes as possible.
	If possible, provide extra copies of Here Come the Aliens to struggling students, either individually or in pairs, to make note-taking easier for them.
	Call on the struggling students first to ensure they have a chance to respond without someone else sharing their answers first.
