INFERENCES

Making an inference is also known as reading between the lines. The reader must put together the information the author provides and the information that the reader already knows to come up with the answer.

The links below are to lessons that I have created for developing inferencing skills.

Baloney -- A lesson using the amazing picture book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith

The links below are to sites that further explain inferences and/or provide sample questions or activities.

Making Inferences About Characters -- This page, from Brockton Public Schools, provides a list of character traits and inferences that can be made about a character based on those traits.

Reading Comprehension -- This page, from St. Petersburg College explains what will be on a reading comprehension test. It then gives sample questions, some of which require making inferences.

The Way Things Were -- This student activity, from Humanities-Interactive, requires students to make inferences after viewing a picture.

Identifying and Making Inferences -- This page, from Santa Barbara City College, is from the ESL department. However, it will work for all students. It provides a lesson on inferences, which is followed by a link to an online quiz. The quiz can be printed, though.

I highly recommend using logic problems to help students develop skills in making inferences. The links below will take you to a few of the logic problem sites that are available.

Brain Boosters -- This page from DiscoverySchool.com has several puzzles that work well for developing inferencing skills.

Math Trail 2002--Thinking Logically, Solving Problems -- This page from School District 21 contains kid friendly problems and directions for solving them.

The Logic Problems Page -- This page contains everything you need to know about logic problems, including what they are, how to solve them, and examples. The site has not been updated in a few years, but it is still a great place for a beginner.

How to Solve Logic Problems -- This from Puzzlemakers, Ltd. page has an explanation, complete with example, of how to solve logic problems.
