LEGO TRANSITIONS

To be honest, this is not totally "my" idea.  I am not sure whom to give credit to, so I will just supply you with the information and the way in which I used it. About two months ago, I found a website that suggested using Legos as a manipulative. At the time, I needed a way to teach transitions in writing, so I took their idea and created the following:

bullet

Buy one box of about 500 Legos. (I bought the generic kind, and they were only about $8.)

bullet

Put an even amount into baggies. (The color doesn't have to be the same but the type of pieces must be.)

bullet

Within each bag, include a list of the transitions (spatial, chronological, etc.)

bullet

Have the students sit back to back and give them each a bag. Have one student create a structure using all of his/her pieces.

bullet

After approximately five minutes, have the student with the structure, using the transitional words, tell his/her partner how to build the model. Obviously, no one is allowed to look until "time" is called.

bullet

The same process is then repeated with the other student.

My kids really seemed to like this activity. But I do suggest numbering your Legos with a permanent marker and labeling each bag. This is helpful at the end of the day when you notice several pieces on the floor without homes!
