DESCRIPTORS FOR
SENTENCE FLUENCY

The following list of descriptors is adapted from the Six Trait Analytic Writing Model rubric for sentence fluency. I developed this list for my students so that they would have a reference for how writers develop sentence fluency.

A writer should do the following:

bulletGive the writing an easy flow and rhythm
bulletInvite expressive oral reading of the text
bulletUse complete sentences--any fragments must add to the meaning of the text
bulletUse different sentence lengths
bulletUse different sentence beginnings
bulletUse different sentence structures
bulletUse writing that sounds natural
