SIX TRAIT
ANALYTIC WRITING MODEL
HANDBOOK FOR STUDENTS

This is a list of items available at this site that are part of the handbook that I provide to each of my 8th grade students. There are other middle school and intermediate center school teachers in my district who provide this handbook to their students as well. It is my belief that the key to a district's success with this model is consistency. Everything does not have to be identical, but some consistency is beneficial to the students.

I have divided the handbook into seven sections--one section for each of the six traits and another section for revising and editing. This year for my students, I will be adding an eighth section covering the MLA (Modern Language Association) format, which my district has adopted for all subjects. This format governs the margins, headers, bibliographic entries, etc. for a written product.

Each section has its own color. Everything I use--posters, handouts, manipulatives, etc.--that has do with that trait or section, is put on the same color. Also, I used a clip art program to create an icon for each trait. That icon is on the posters, manipulatives, and divider sheets in the handbook. With the color coding and icons, students easily recognize the materials for each trait. Included in each section below are the color and an explanation of the icon I use for that trait.

Go to Kim's Kreations if you are interested in purchasing reproducible copy masters for the Six Trait Analytic Writing Model Student Handbook.  The formatting work has already been done for you.
