WHOSE VOICE IS THIS?Cut out pictures of people from old magazines. Put the pictures in sets of three or four. The pictures in each set should be similar in some way. For example, all of the pictures may be of children who look sad. Then write a paragraph that relates to the set. The set of sad children might have a paragraph about a pet that died. Put each picture and paragraph on a separate sheet of construction paper and laminate them. Create several different sets. Divide your students into groups of three to five members. Have each group look at a set of pictures and read the paragraph. Now they are to decide which person wrote the paragraph. Give them a few minutes to make their decisions, then have them trade with another group. Continue until all groups have discussed all sets. Finally, discuss the groups' choices in a whole group activity. This activity invites discussion. (Some of my students have even argued about whose voice the writing depicted.)
